Linen Project Bag

As a business one of the things we’re constantly trying to do is to reduce the impact we have on the environment. Using less cotton is one way we can do that – cotton is a thirsty crop that uses huge amounts of water.

There’s no one answer about how much water growing cotton uses, and it’s something that will improve over time. But even with the most water saving methods it can still take 10,000 liters of water to produce a kilo of cotton.

If you’re wearing a cotton t-shirt right now I’d bet that it weighs more than 100 grams. That’s 1000 liters of water.

So we decided that we’d use much less cotton. Going forward we’ll use linen for all of our bag linings. We’ll use linen where we would have used cotton canvas.

If you’d like a bag where the only cotton used is the thread you’ll find our linen project bags here.

Where we’ll still use cotton for now is for showerproof bags that are made with duck canvas. As far as I know there isn’t a linen equivalent, but I’ll keep looking. We’ve already got rid of some plastic by sourcing metal toggles – they’re on all of the bags now.

That means that once our existing stock of duck canvas bags find new homes there won’t be cotton linings in anything we sell. As they’re being changed the existing duck canvas bags have been added to the sale shop – you can find them here.
