A Few Changes

There are a couple of changes happening at The Knitting Goddess and we wanted to explain what is happening and why.

The first thing to let you know is that from Tuesday 5th April The Knitting Goddess will become part of a new company – Simple Perfect Ltd. The company is owned by Bobbie and I.

So why a limited company? Going forward we want to be able to grow both the yarn and screen printing sides of the business. They share premises. They work together. However we’d also like the option of printing things which are less yarn themed and which won’t fit into The Knitting Goddess. So we looked at different ways of doing this and keeping everything straight for accounting purposes, and having a limited company was the best option.

For now we’ll still have one website – theknittinggoddess.co.uk – but in time we’ll launch a second website using the Simple Perfect name.

Yarn will be dyed in the same way.

Orders will be packed and posted in the same way.

We’ll still drink just as much tea and eat just as many biscuits as before.

Very, very much business as usual. There’s a little more admin for us, but nothing too onerous.

The second change which will also happen on 5th April is that we’ll be VAT registered.

If you live in the UK or EU you’ll see price increases of around 10% – so you’ll pay a bit more and we’ll make a bit less profit on each item we sell. We’ll pay 20% of each sale to the VAT man.

If you live outside the EU you’ll be able to pay VAT exclusive prices which will be 20% than the new UK and EU prices. We still make a bit less profit on each item, but we don’t need to pay 20% to the VAT man (which is why you don’t need to pay it to us).

This means that on Monday I’ll be at the computer changing prices and setting up different lists to make sure that everyone pays the right tax. So on Monday the shop will be closed, and you’ll see different changes taking place. On Tuesday 5th April the shop will open again and the new prices will be charged. I’d love to think that this will all go through completely smoothly, but I suspect there may be a glitch or two along the way while I get to grips with the different changes I need to make. So if anything seems wrong to you please shout up so I can get it sorted out.

We’ve thought long and hard about what to do about club prices. While we’ll be changing prices in the shop we’re going to leave prices the same for UK and EU customers who have already signed up and chosen to pay month by month. Customers outside the EU will pay slightly reduced club prices from the July club invoices. One thing we can’t do is go back and change prices for non EU customers who paid for the full year back in November – we can’t issue a refund. To compensate for this we’ll be sending out an extra gift with the last club parcel of the year for everyone who bought an annual subscription.

We’ll continue to offer discounts and other offers to newsletter subscribers – sign up here to make sure you don’t miss out.

Perhaps the most visible change is going to be the way our yarn is labelled. We need to add some extra information to labels, so we’re switching over to ball bands – or skein bands. There’s one more change with out labels and I’ll talk more about that on Monday. It’s a lovely change that both Bobbie and I are very happy about, and we’re looking forward to sharing it with you.

We’re happy to answer any questions you have about these changes – leave a comment or email us.
