Dye Classes at Unravel, Denby Dale

Last Saturday saw the first day of ‘next steps in dyeing’ classes at Unravel.

I’m always conscious that lots of people who come and learn to dye then want to play more with colour, and that the idea of finding space, dyes and yarn can be off putting.

The ‘next steps’ classes are designed so that participants can dye yarn for a specific project, or explore a different colour palette.

There’s very little actual teaching, so I have three hours to answer individual queries, help when needed, heat set yarn and admire what’s going on.

This is what the morning class made.

This gorgeous set of gradient skeins is going to form part of an afghan

Colours inspired by peacock feathers, then modified to suit the wearer. These will be transformed into crochet motifs.

Colour inspiration from Charles Rennie Mackintosh, these colours are going to be combined with black for a double knit shawl

This was the most ambitious project of the day – 1200 grams of yarn for a Humbolt sweater. There’s some lime buried underneath the red wine colour. We left this in bags so it could be steam set at home rather than tying up the microwave.

The afternoon class was equally colourful

Random colours – the dyer worked between several ideas of inspiration so there’s no real theme behind these.

These five colours are destined to be a gorgeous fair isle scarf which appeared in the knitter – and the dyer did an amazing job of matching colours.

More peacock inspired skeins – aren’t they different from the first batch?

Yarns dyed to knit up as mock fairisle, and to work with tiny balls of yarn which were part of an advent calendar.

It’s lovely to see so many gorgeous colours together.

If you’d like to come and take a dye workshop with me I’m teaching at Unravel on 18th June (both beginners and next steps classes). More details and bookings through Mary Holt at Unravel on 01484 767502

I’m very much looking forward to next weekend when we have 2 beginners classes.
