Self Striping Yarns – and a Competition.

To celebrate the release of Terry Pratchett’s last Discworld novel on 27th of August I wanted to dye up something rather special.

Something that a brilliant and slightly twisted mind would approve of.

So I decided it would be fun to revisit the 12 colours which formed the Granny Weatherwax sock club and turn them into self striping yarns.

The yarns will be available in both the British wool and nylon and Britsock bases.

These yarns will go on sale to subscribers on the 27th of August and any that are left will be added to the shop update of 28th August. You can sign up for the newsletter here.

On to the yarns – the first 6 photos are of British wool and nylon base and the last 6 are of Britsock.

85 Responses to Self Striping Yarns – and a Competition.

  1. Helen says:

I would knit socks for Dave Grohl of the Foo Fighters because he’s so awesome he can rock your socks off (ha ha) and because his feet could do with a little TLC after he broke his leg on stage recently (and carried on performing because he’s so rock n roll like that). He’s definitely sock-worthy.

If I won, I’d love Octarine in the wool/nylon base.

  2. Miranda says:

I would love to knit a pair for my husband for our wedding anniversary ….. To show that I do use the yarn in my stash and so that not all my knitting is for myself.

Any britsock yarn as he would be so pleased to have a pair of socks hand knitted.

  3. I would knit a pair of socks for one of my Dave’s (David Russel Wood), hes from the Cruxshadows (my favourite band), I guess the reason why would be I think he is an amazing violinist and everytime I have met him he has been so lovely, I think I’ve stolen quite a lot of hugs off him.

I’d love Death’s Broccoli on the wool/nylon base. Although I really love so so many of the colours and completely geeked out at the mention of Prachett inspired colourways, I love the thought of this so so very much.

  4. I have many friends called Dave so I’d have to knit for the Proper Dave @SFXDaveB for he is the leader of all Dave’s. That and he’s a really lovely chap, and if I give him socks maybe he’ll forgive me for not liking his beard. πŸ˜‰

I’d go for Britsock yearn (because it sounds like it’s from Judge Dredd, and I’d love it in Greebo, A) because I love Greebo, and B) because the colours seem a bit Hufflepuff to me, and anything that combines several of my passions is always a winner!

  5. Ronda Zwierz says:

I would knit socks for my father Dave because he is awesome in so many ways and because my Mother recently passed and she taught me how to knit, so in a way they would be a gift from both of us.

  6. josiekitten says:

I’d knit a pair for Michaelangelo’s David (Dave to his friends!) because I figure that after all these years of standing there starkers, at least he’d have warm feet!
If I was picked as the winner, I’d love the wool/nylon base in the Death’s Broccoli colourway.

  7. Scully Wully says:

I would like to knit socks for David (Dave) Duchovny because he played Fox Mulder in the X-Files and who doesn’t love a guy who is willing to play a character named Fox!! (Plus, he was in fact a fox πŸ˜‰ ) However, the main reason is because he made me want to watch the X-Files, and thus become obsessed with it, and without that I wouldn’t have named my darling bunny ‘Scully’ and without my darling ‘Scully’ there would be no me on the internet as I am named after her!!

I would like to win the Britsock Gaspode because Britsock is FAB and the Gaspode colourway looks wonderful ☺

Thanks for the comp Joy and Rachel β™₯

  8. Thank you – great choice.

  9. The Dave of choice would have to be third-class technician Dave Lister, the last human being alive. Any chap who is doomed to spend eternity with a highly evolved cat, a hologram and a walking Sinclair ZX81 needs more socks, if only to replace those that have made the evolutionary leap and can walk unaided from the laundry basket to commune with single socks in the great hamper in the sky.

They’d have to be knit Bristsock (Red Dwarf is an awesome British Sci-Fi Sit-Com) in The Lady Herself (after Dave’s first love Kochanski) because it would be rude not to.

  10. Leanne says:

I would love to knit a pair of socks for the artist Dave Cole. The structure of his pieces is always inspirational- and who can forget the bold stripes created by his installation The Knitting Machine? Totally appropriate that I should knit him some striped socks πŸ™‚

    • Good choice – when you get a minute please let me know which colour way and yarn base you’d choose if you were the winner.

      • Leanne says:

Oops, sorry! It would have to be the Luggage, so it would hold all his installations and all my stash… Even the words ‘Sapient Pearwood’ sound like the name of a sculpture! But I’d be very happy to have any of them, I adore Mr P, and the colours are all really nice- and I’d normally go for a wool and nylon base x

  11. Sarah says:

I would knit socks for Dave Strader, the new commentator for the Dallas Stars (I can’t think of another Dave aside from my brother & he’s very much a David).

So, for my random Dave I would have to pick Mathematical Camel Spit, both cause it’s almost in team colours & also as that sounds like a phrase his fellow commentator would use.

  12. My husband is called Dave so that is an easy one. As for the yarn he does love his Britsock socks for when he is travelling so it would have to be The Luggage

Love your new colourways btw and am very tempted by all of them

  13. Trisha Thomas says:

I don’t know any Daves (how sad!), so I may have to temporarily rename my Husband Alan, as it’s his turn for a pair of socks. I think he’d like Gaspode Britsock, but if making for me I’d definitly choose Death’s Brocolli and jump the queue as I like the colourway – also like the Death character, and Susan, oh and Granny Weatherwax, Nanny Ogg – I’ll stop now before I get too carried away.

  14. Laura Allport says:

I would have knitted some sort for David Hibbert back in the day. He was the most profound and influential mathematician at the start of the last century. His description of infinity known as “Hilbert’s Hotel” is sheer elegance. He is the Dave for whom I would knit.

Of course, he would be happiest with Mathematical Camel Spit, probably on a wool nylon base for durability.

  15. Sharon says:

I’d knit a pair of socks for my husband, Dave. He’s totally wonderful, warm and yet soft as well – rather like your yarn!

And I’d knit it in Ook as he is a bookish sort of person, on your wool/nylon base as he can be hard on the heels and toes of his socks – so I’d reinforce them as I was knitting.

  16. rachaelmcshane says:

I’d go back in time and make socks for jazz pianist and composer Dave Brubeck so that he could ‘Take Five’ and put his feet up in nice cosy socks!
If I was lucky enough to win I’d love Octarine in the wool/nylon base.

  17. Q the Pirate says:

These are amazing! I feel like I need them all!

I would knit socks for my husband, whose name is Adam but whose brother calls him Dave. I don’t get it either, but they seem happy… Anyway, I’d knit socks for him because I’ve never knit socks before (although I am about to cast on my inaugural pair of aran house socks to see if I can do it) and I know he won’t mind if they’re a bit wonky. I think I would use Ook, because his feet are enormous and that seems appropriate.

  18. Anne Bradley says:

I would knit socks for Dave the minion cause my children love him and I’m sure Dave never gets any presents from Gru!!

If I won I’d love widdlepoons in the wool and nylon base πŸ˜€

  19. vipera78 says:

I would knit them for David (Dave) Beckham. For him they would be incredible versatile:
    1) When he’s doing underwear shootings, he could now have something pretty and comfy to stuff his pants.
    2) If he gets bored by the dull white pants, he could wear one sock over his best friend.
    3) And last but not least: He could wear them conventionally when he has cold feet.

My colour of choice would be Draco Lunaris because that’s light enough so you don’t see it in the white pants. And the material the wool and nylon so Victoria can wash them easily.

  20. Erin says:

I would rename myself Dave. “Who’s Erin? Never met her. The name’s Dave. Like my socks?”

And gosh. As for colour way, mathematical camel spit (or The Luggage. Oh, but the librarian would be so sad if i didnt chose him! Or or or or…. Decisions are hard. I wonder what Vetinari would chose?) In Britsock!

  21. Emily says:

I don’t know any Dave’s. But I know a man who would love a pair of handknit socks very, very much.

I would knit him some Britsock Greebo’s because I’m amazed that he loves me despite all my many faults, and because he totally deserves some for putting up with me.

  22. I think I’d have to knit a pair for Dave from Only Fools and Horses. That’s Rodney to everyone except Trigger, but I quite like him as a Dave. And the colourway would have to be Greebo as it would suit him down to a tee (and I flipping love it!)

  23. Kay says:

He’s more of a David than a Dave, but I’d love to knit a pair for David Tennant. He’s another important part of the great British SF/F genre for me, like all the Discworld books. And while I love all the colourways, The Luggage is the one calling my name the loudest right now.

  25. I would knit socks for my hubbie Dave who is a recent convert to hand knitted socks in colourway Ook.

  26. Carol Warrington says:

I would knit a very large sock with eyeholes in for David Cameron so that he can hide his lack of embarrassment whilst robbing the people blind. And I suppose the lady herself in britsock, because the people’s flag . . .

  27. Carol says:

I would like to knit some socks using the Octarine colourway for my son-in-law. He is a wonderful husband to my daughter and Dad to my grandchildren. Also, despite having had 2 operations on his foot, continues his work as a postman with good humour. I think his feet deserve some tlc!

  28. Jules says:

I think I am changing my name to Dave, Dave is on my to do list I am just learning the art of sock knitting and I love the colour The Luggage.

  29. Nami says:

My Dave would be my grand-aunt’s husband. My grand-aunt, who was Japanese, married Dave, an American GI, soon after WWII and eventually immigrated to live in Las Vegas. I’ve met Dave and my grand-aunt several times throughout my life and I recently had a chance to meet up with Dave’s daughter and her family at my grandmother’s home in Japan during their tour of the country. They had taught Dave and my grand-aunt how to use Skype so they could keep in contact while they traveled. It is amazing how much technology has advanced. My grandmother was able to “see” her younger sister (grand-aunt) and Dave for the first time in many, many years! Dave looked much older than I last saw him, but thankfully still healthy and well.
I hope I get a chance to meet them again. Since the kids would be older, maybe I’ll have a chance to go out with DH and try our luck at the casino!

Death’s Broccoli, with its purple and black, is the one I like!

  30. Helen Norris says:

I would knit for Dave my childhood playmate. He was useless at Maths so it would be the Mathematical Camel Spit for him. Just to rub it in.

  31. Kelly doolan says:

Well all the replies have amused me no end for the last 10 mins..
My Dave is, “Dave The Bike”. Dave is the local bike shop hero. He fixes bikes and has been known to help with flat pram tyres too. Always time for a chat. He provides tea, I provide biscuits. It would be nice to provide socks for warm feet in his cold workshop in winter.

I think wool/nylon in medicine from forn parts. Always bright and happy like the man himself ☺️

  32. Sara says:

I think I’d knit for Dave Gorman, comedian and author. His wife is expecting their first child and I think men often get neglected at such times so a pair of handmade socks would give him some pampering. Plus self stripping socks would go perfectly with his trade mark check shirts. Wouldn’t they?

My choice would be Mathematical Camel Spit in Britsock.

  33. Angela says:

I would make socks for the lovely caretaker at work, my favourite Dave, who looks after us when we have our monthly knitting group. As we work in a library, the shade would have to be Ook in Britsock. I wonder if my boss (not half as nice as The Librarian) would allow me to knit them in works time, as it is vaguely library related? Or should I count myself lucky to get an afternoon once a month to sit and knit and get paid!? Ook ook ook.

  34. Veronica says:

I would make Dave socks for my sons , Christopher Dave and Matthew Dave ! Christopher Dave would choose Dave socks in Ook ( or Draco Lunaris ) and Matthew Dave would choose his Dave socks in Death Broccoli ( or Sorcerer’s Eye’s). Both would choose Britsock with afterthought heels. They were both brought up on the Discworld novels and every Christmas one or more would be in their stocking. Terry Pratchett and his amazing mind were part of their childhood and youth. They would know where each colour would be found in the books. I have just finished my first pair of socks after fifty two years of knitting. Can’t wait to make more.

  36. Harri says:

The Dave I would knit socks for is my Dad, in Medicine from Forn Parts because it is a loud and opinionated and will suit him down to a T. I would choose the British wool and nylon base because I love the smell (though I am sure that Britsock is equally lovely).

  37. Rhian H says:

I live in Wales where pretty much every man is a Dave or Dai. Did think about a duelling competition to seek out an appropriate Dave who’d be rewarded with a pair of hand knitted socks. On reflection I would knit socks for David (Dave) Bowie so his feet wouldn’t be cold on his numerous trips into space. They’d have to be Britsock as the man is a British Institution and ‘the luggage’ would be the most appropriate colourway as he’d be packing them in his suitcase.

  38. Terri says:

I would like to knit socks for my local delivery man, whom I affectionately call DPD Dave. His name is Dave and I love receiving my text message and email telling me the hour time slot when Dave will be arriving. I may even stalk him on the internet, just to check where his is and when he’s likely to be delivering to me. He’s always on time, always friendly and always has a smile whatever the weather. I don’t know a more deserving Dave.

I would choose The Lady Herself in the British wool and nylon base, as they would co-ordinate with DPD Dave’s uniform and be machine washable. Just to add a disclaimer, there is a good chance that DPD Dave would never receive these socks and they would somehow end up in my own sock drawer.

  39. Meg says:

I would knit a pair for Dave (David) Cameron to showcase how important women designers, freelancers and entrepreneurs are for the economy and I would use The Luggage colour way to remind him that we are all travellers in this world, just passing through, and that therefore a bit more humanity and compassion in his government’s policies would be a good thing!

  40. Christel says:

I’d knit a pair of socks for my favourite Dave, my son David. He’s only 4 and he is very knitworthy – socks have been made and worn and re-requested.

His favourite colours are green and red, so my choice would be Mathematical Camel spit on British wool and nylon.

  41. Josie Homewood says:

My choice of Dave is Davy Jones from The Monkees. I used to watch the reruns in the early 90’s when I was little and I loved it, and I still giggle over it. Davy is my favourite Monkee. I think the colourway Ook looks like his outfit from the music video from Daydream Believer and that’s one of my favourite songs! πŸ™‚

  42. Linda Choudoir says:

I don’t have a Dave in my life anymore. I lost my brother Dave at the age of 10 and my nephew Dave at the age of 19. So the name Dave brings me sadness, but the pattern Dave brings me comfort. I can knit Dave socks when I am crazy stressed out, when I am so busy and trying to sneak in a moment of knitting time, or when I just don’t want to think. For this reason I love Dave. And the color I love would be Draco Lunaris. Thank you Joy for such beautiful yarn, and Rachel for such beautiful designs.
